Vision and Purpose

The Henry Bellmon Research Center is a first-of-its-kind facility on the Oklahoma State University campus.  Created to facilitate interdisciplinary research, the HBRC fosters unique interactions among some of OSU’s most ingenious and successful research teams.

Within its 124,000 square feet, the HBRC brings together more than 200 faculty members, post-doctoral students and graduate students to form six main focus areas: synthetic chemistry, biodiversity, biophysics, photonics, bioforensics, and biogeophysics.  The HBRC also houses several core facilities – DNA sequencing, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics and x-ray diffraction.

“The HBRC gives scientists from multiple disciplines the opportunity to interact with colleagues from other fields to create an environment of discovery and inventiveness,” said OSU VP for Research and Technology Transfer Dr. Stephen McKeever.  “Students and faculty from various OSU departments work collaboratively there on projects at the cutting edge of modern research.”

The building is named after the late Henry Bellmon, a former U.S. senator and Oklahoma governor.  Bellmon graduated from OSU (then Oklahoma A&M) in 1942.  “Governor Bellmon was so instrumental in establishing state support for research in Oklahoma and in particular at OSU,” said OSU President Burns Hargis.  “I can’t think of a better name to put on this building that will be the center of research at Oklahoma State University.”

The HBRC was completed in 2010 as the first of a three-phase research complex designed to enhance research capabilities at OSU.  The completion of two additional phases, which include the renovation of the Physical Sciences building, will make the HBRC and surrounding areas a hub of interdisciplinary activity.

The $70 million facility is the single largest project from the 2005 Oklahoma Higher Education Capital Bond Program.The HBRC is expected to aid in the recruitment of additional high-quality faculty, and to vault OSU’s research programs to even higher levels.
